Turkey wants to be one of the most visited places on earth. Right now it’s Number 7. The most visited place is France. (…) Perhaps it’s the presence of exquisitely preserved cultural treasures (…) and the absence of billboards, trash and Walmarts. People don’t cross oceans and continents to see what they can see at home. (…) Turkey has absolutely unique places, important to the whole world, for Turkey is geographically and historically in the center.

The Minister of Forestry and Environment, Veysel Eroğlu, on a number of platforms, declared that the government would build the Dam despite all obstacles. The Ilısu Dam became a “project of honour” for the Turkish State which becomes clear in the words of Eroğlu “We do not need their money. We will construct this dam at any cost”.
